Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year!10/28/2014
It is an exciting time to be in education. Last year, Governor Brown enacted sweeping changes to school district funding with the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The new formula gives school districts additional funds, or supplemental grants, for students who are English learners (EL), socio-economically disadvantaged or foster youth. In Modesto City Schools, approximately 74% of students fall into one or more of those categories.
As part of the LCFF, we created a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) describing our goals and how we plan to improve student outcomes over the next three years. We solicited feedback from a variety of stakeholders, then reviewed and compiled the feedback to create the plan. The Board of Education held a hearing for public comment on our LCAP in May and approved the plan in June. The 2014-2017 LCAP is available on our website.
We have 15 new collaboration days - afternoons dedicated to one-hour collaboration activities for our teachers. Although the collaboration days mean a minimum day for students, new bell schedules ensure our students receive the same amount of instructional minutes as last year.
Also new this year is the full implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Over the last two years our teachers have studied, learned and piloted lessons aligned with the standards. Teachers will continue to receive professional development on the new standards throughout this year.
Please make the time to be involved in your student's education. Studies show that parent involvement positively affects student achievement, contributes to higher quality education and better performance of schools overall. Talk with your student's teacher about ways you can help your child have a successful school year.
Let's make it a great year!
